Job Description
Peninsula Health is seeking an outstanding appointee for the position of Director of Surgery on the foreshadowed retirement of the long standing and highly regarded incumbent.
Peninsula Health is located on Victoria’s beautiful Mornington Peninsula. The main site is located at Frankston some 40kms from the Melbourne CBD. There are 400 acute beds at the Frankston site – a tertiary referral centre affiliated with Monash University – and in addition to the acute services there is a mainstream psychiatry unit, aged and palliative care, rehabilitation, residential and community health services. These Services are supported by a full range of diagnostic and allied heath services.
General Surgery comprises three sub-specialty units - Upper GI [incorporating Hepato/Pancreatico/Biliary Surgical Service and Oesophagogastric Surgery], Colorectal and Breast/Endocrine. There are 9 sessional surgeons and 1 fulltime surgeon [Director of Surgery] across the 3 units. Surgery has access to operating theatres at both Frankston and Rosebud Hospitals.
Other surgical specialties represented within Peninsula Health are ENT, Ophthalmology, Thoracic, Orthopaedic, Plastic [including Faciomaxillary], Urology, Vascular, and Paediatric Surgery.
The Director of Surgery will be responsible for the leadership, organisation and management and for ongoing strategic service development of Surgery at Peninsula Health. An academic appointment may be offered by Monash University to a person with appropriate academic credentials and if so the appointee will be responsible to the Head, Southern Clinical School, Monash University, for teaching, research and administrative activities relevant to Monash University, in conjunction with the Head of the Department of Surgery [Monash Medical Centre] who is the academic head of surgery in the university’s Southern Clinical School.
Applicants for this outstanding career opportunity should have extensive clinical experience in a relevant branch of surgery and in clinical management. Energy, vision and a proven commitment to excellence in research and medical education are essential. A higher research degree or an equivalent track record in research [as demonstrated by published work and research grant success] would be highly regarded both by Peninsula Health and by Monash University.
A competitive remuneration package including rights of private practice will be negotiated with the successful candidate. This appointment will be for a period of up to five years in the first instance. Relocation travel, removal and temporary housing assistance will be available for an interstate or overseas appointee.
Frankston is located on the eastern shore of Port Phillip Bay and is described as the 'Gateway to the Mornington Peninsula'. It lies at the northern end of that enormous promontory on the eastern shore of Port Phillip Bay. It boasts 7 km of beaches and coastal habitat, bushlands, historic buildings, theatres, galleries, restaurants, nightclubs, indoor climbing, golf, tenpin bowling, botanic gardens, a pier and all manner of aquatic opportunities such as swimming, fishing, waterskiing and yachting
