Professor (Associate Professor) / Director of Geriatric Medicine

Eastern Health is seeking an outstanding appointee for the position of Professor/ Director of Geriatric Medicine.
Located in Melbournes eastern suburbs, this position offers the opportunity to lead and develop Geriatric Medicine at Peter James Centre and Wantirna Health. Providing strategic and clinical co-ordination, this position is required to demonstrate ongoing excellence in clinical practice.
The Director will be involved in teaching and research as well as providing an environment for staff development and excellent patient care, also having responsibility for the clinical performance of Geriatric services at Peter James Centre and Wantirna Health assisting in clinical service planning within the sub-acute program.
The opportunity may also exist for the successful applicant, to receive an academic appointment through the Monash University Eastern Clinical School.

This position provides the opportunity for both teaching and research interests to be explored, with the successful applicant required to co-ordinate and participate in:
Teaching programs
Quality management/clinical audit/professional review activities
Research activities and clinical developments including the establishment and maintenance of an active Geriatric Medicine research group at both Eastern Health and Monash University
Moving the research in Geriatric Medicine into clinical trials and ultimately to an approved practice
Development of relevant new service
This position will provide leadership focus for Geriatric Medicine across Eastern Health and Monash University, fostering excellence in research, professional activities and policy development related to Geriatric Medicine whilst establishing defined objectives and goals for Geriatric Medicine Services and ensuring that all Geriatric Medicine service commitments to patient care, teaching and research maintained.
This role will incorporate participation in all following sectors:
Clinical Services
Be responsible for the medical management of geriatric medicine patients
Promote ongoing responsibility, delegation and the development of necessary skills in other medical, nursing and technical staff attached to the rehabilitation services.
Ensure that clinical review and other quality management improvement activities are undertaken.
Be involved in some component of direct clinical service provision within Geriatric Medicine.
Administration/ Management
Management & leadership with specific reference to finance, quality improvement and human resources
In conjunction with the Director of Nursing & Operations, monitor and manage bed days / bed based revenue across the Program
Ensure that appropriate guidance and supervision is provided for Hospital Medical Officers and Registrars in the performance of their duties within the Program
Allocate the designated program medical sessions, and other available resources
Participate in and contribute to the planning process
Ensure timely completion of appropriate data collection commitments
Teaching Programs & Clinical Audit/ Review
Contribute to and participate in the RACP maintenance of standards program
Be involved in professional review activities at Department, Divisional, Program, including participation and roll-out of the Eastern Health Relationship Review Process for medical staff
Participate in and contribute to the meetings and affairs of relevant professional societies, and maintain and extend his/her level of knowledge by reading current literature and meeting professional colleagues
Encourage and be involved in professional review activities at department, divisional and medical staff level
Research Activities & Clinical Developments
Take a leadership role in the development of research with the aim of achieving research objectives at world class standards
Foster and lead the acquisition of research funds from external granting bodies
Conduct and facilitate research in Geriatric Medicine; encourage and support research excellence within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences
Develop research capacity of professional staff
Supervise postgraduate student research
Represent Geriatrics in the formulation of faculty and university research policy
Provide service to external agencies and be a spokesperson for Eastern Health on Geriatrics research
Engage with affiliated research institutes
Applicants must meet the following mandatory criteria:
Registerable with the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria
Fellow of the Australasian College of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent
A record of excellence in leadership in a tertiary institution or equivalent
A distinguished record of research in a relevant discipline as evidenced by success in attracting research funding, publications in leading academic journals and research leadership
Clinical capability as evidenced by clinical practice or involvement in the conduct of clinical trials
Excellent organisational and communication skills
Demonstrated ability to generate research income including from both traditional and more innovative sources of research funding
The ability to make a significant contribution to postgraduate training program in Geriatric Medicine
Willingness and capacity to make a substantial contribution to all activities of the department, including administration and planning
An outstanding record in teaching gerontology at a postgraduate level
Mentoring of postgraduate research students
Evidence of ability in, and commitment to, the promotion of Geriatric Medicine as a discipline to potential students and the wider community
Proven professional leadership qualities and capacity for executive administrative responsibilities
Very high-level communication skills and ability to liaise well with other academics
